Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. Obviously, my birthday is one of the reasons I have yet to make a new entry about a certain recent development. =)

Ironically, I'm pretty sure I mentioned mechanics that *do* require thought or improvisation in this encounter. In fact, nearly all of Sunwell's encounters require some sort of reaction to random factors.

With Kalecgos, who gets teleported is random, meaning people have to react dynamically if, say, a bunch of healers get ported right off that are scheduled to go down later.

With Brutallus, who gets burn is random and requires a person to react quickly at times (though this is mostly scripted).

With Felmyst, who gets encapsulated is random and requires fast reactions based on whether or not a person near you gets encapsulated (it does AE damage around the targeted person). And where she lays down her breath (which mind controls a person indefinitely) is also random.

With the Twins, who gets flame sear and high stacks of fire damage is random and requires healers to ramp up on people who get high stacks. And who gets conflag is also random and can require extreme reaction speeds if the tank gets targeted while also stunned (all of the melee have to run away if this happens).

On M'uru, where the sentinels spawn is random and how your tank picks them up and DPS pushes damage onto them depends on these factors. And phase two is very random with void zone placements and gravity ball spawns. If your tank and melee do not react to gravity ball placements well, it can mean a wipe. And this was especially the case pre-nerf.

And I've already explained the issues for Kil'jaeden.

Really, only Brutallus is very straightforward in a scripted sense. Everything else requires dynamic reactions. While the random factors can determine whether or not a specific attempt is impossible or not, it doesn't mean the fight is easy when the stars align. If anything, it simply means that specific attempt is easier than one of those near impossible situations. I guess I should have been more clear in that regard.

Your opinion would definitely have been valid for BT and most of Hyjal (aside from Archimonde). But not for Sunwell.

Great article. I read it and it reminded me of why I find traditional MMO style raiding so lame. I had overly scripted encounters that require little or no thought or improvisation. Maybe this is why no MMO raiding has ever compared with DAoC RvR for me.

[...] Kil’jaedan to 25%…Finally; Summer Woes for Everyone Although I wasn’t working on Kil’jaedan at the time, this really echoes some of my sentiments from a few months ago. Lume eloquently discusses the difficulties faced by any progression guild trying to push forward this time of year, and is only one of his many exceptionally well-written pieces. [...]

An interesting idea to schedule an expansion release such that it takes into account the seasonal changes guilds go through. It seems particularly painful that we're getting so much news about Wrath during the summer months when guilds are already likely to be suffering. I know my guild hasn't raided in nearly a month, and I personally feel little inclination to attend, despite showing up out of obligation. You're likely right, though; Blizzard has such a slow development cycle that we're just lucky to see an expansion at all. If they tried to "time" the releases based on external factors, we'd be waiting till 2009 at least.

I'm glad to hear your guild is doing well, despite the impending release of Wrath. :-)

Glad to hear you're rocking it! The expansion will bring it's own set of difficulties, but I think it's better to focus on Kil'jaeden at the moment and poll your core about their plans. I'm still making my Wrath plans in jello rather than stone, too much is yet unknown.
