The major reason I didn't is because there's an NDA in place on SWTOR, and because GW2 still has quite a ways to go in development.

No doubt, based on the existing videos and demos, SWTOR has shown us its mission system is far and away better than anything else we've ever seen in an MMO. But it's left to be seen how good the rest of the game truly is, especially because Bioware isn't done making tweaks.

Another reason I didn't talk about the future is because, if I do, it will be on a general gaming blog.

I do agree that Bioware and Arenanet are taking some steps in the right direction. But they aren't finished games, yet.

@writing quality:

Cataclysm has hundreds of typos and grammatical errors. Examples:
- lack of capital letters: "Tol Barad" is written as "tol barad" in TB NPCs dialogs;
- commas between subject and its verb in so many quests that I lost count;
- missing commas in vocatives in many quests and NPC speeches: "What exactly shaman do you intend to do with it?" (http://www.wowhead.com/quest=26752/audience-with-the-stonemother);
- double "to" in many quests in Deepholm, example: "We need to to repair the World Pillar as soon as possible" (http://www.wowhead.com/quest=26876/the-world-pillar-fragment);
and many others which I didn't try to remember.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't talk much about the future of MMOs after saying you're not so optimistic. For the first time in a while there's MMOs on the horizon that I'm looking forward to. I was initially fairly cold on TOR, even though I appreciated their focus on 1upping WoW on what it did much better than its contemporaries, an interesting solo experience; now I think a lot of people are looking for a game that's WoW but fresh in a way they weren't before. Guild Wars 2 is also looking very promising; when I played it at PAX in 2010 it was already pretty solid, and it's got some very ambitious ideas that it looks like they're going to execute well on. The open question is whether they manage to keep a long-term playerbase; not having a subscription fee will help in that regard but it won't be enough.

Anyway, it feels like developers are finally getting out from under the shadow of WoW; instead of building PvP-focused MMOs to try and address WoW's perceived weaknesses, they're trying to improve on WoW's successes and evolve the genre further away from the DIKU model, and I can't help but see that as a ray of sunshine.

I quit about 6 weeks ago, after 6 years, so can utterly understand why you feel this way. After the first two weeks - where I did actually find it *hard* to not play, it suddenly lifted. Feels much better now.

Anyway, thanks for all the writings and good luck.

Play through Silverpine on a low level Horde character - it's one of the gems of this expansion, not to be missed. And if you have the time do the first couple of quests in Hillsbrad afterwards.

It's easy to make broad assumptions like that. I'm not saying that isn't a reason (emphasis on the "a"), but the bigger picture is more complex than that.

Production quality is distinctly lower in MMOs when compared with their traditional counterparts. It’s difficult to pinpoint the reasons. Is there simply not enough money to pay as much attention to detail as the company would like? Or does the company really think it doesn’t matter for an MMO?

It's because it's online, which encourages a "we can fix this later" mindset (meaning: only fix it if there's enough complaint, otherwise it wasn't worth fixing in the first place.)

I can empathise with all your saying re. cataclysm. I think the main thing keeping me in the game atm is the fact that I'm the GL of a reasonably sized guild.

I will prob stick it out at-least until SWToR drops, for old times sake.
