I never liked voting features in forums but I couldn't put my finger on why. You vocalized it very well and made me understand why. Thank you. I'm afraid though it will be quite difficult to get a message about this across to Bizzard as it it is now. I think people are pretty tired of the entire thing and rather would just shut it out from their minds, going back to simply playing the game...

It's what I did few hours ago.
Doesn't matter how much you vent in forum. It's just a waste of time.
Doesn't matter if you sign something like PetitionOnline or the like

Main Blizzard interest is money, and gaming is just a niche they found to get money selling products and services.

Only way to vote against is with wallet.

So I cancelled my preorder of SC2
And closed my WoW account and placed "Eula/Privacy concerns" as reason while closing. And specified very well as additional comment that I don't like RealID as in it's present form and hate the direction is taking.

As a side note....
Many say that all this can be of great worries if you are in some catogories like:
- female
- police
- have a name that is uncommin
and so on.. I won't put a complete list as isn't needed.....

What I say is that privacy isn't only objective. Can be also subjective.
With that I say that may be (and I'm quite sure that for most cases it will) that esposing a name isn't a great matter. Nothing bad will happen.
But anyway why take the risk?
And if someone feel unconfortable esposing such information if not really needed, who I am to tell them to not worry?

And by the way, I don't intend to espose me real name....
I know I can eventually stop writing on forums, but why I can't write on them if I need to?

And I'm sure that Blizzard already know the real names under every character in WoW and BNet forums. You can't write if you don't have a valid account. Eventually they could move to an unique nickname.... But forcing to use realnames....

They'll lose a valid customer ff they don't change their modus operandi.

I think this link pretty much sums up what we can expect if this change goes live.

http://wowriot.gameriot.com/blogs/Americans-are-bad-at-games/Real-Names-on-the-Official-Forums-New-REAL-ID-function?gr_i_ni

Also, the official feedback thread for this is growing at a rate of 10 pages every 5 minutes. Players are definately voicing their concerns.

I definitely think it's time we get more vocal about it. This is a company that produces (a) game(s) we love, but they are ruining it with policies with huge loopholes and additional negative consequences. If we don't speak up, it could get worse. And if it gets worse, it becomes almost impossible to support and play these games. The more vocal we are, the quicker they might realize how big of a mistake they are making. And if they don't realize the mistakes, then well, at least we tried.

Emotional post or not, you pretty much hit home; the RealID thread over on the EJBB has exploded.

A few other things:

1) Right now, you can actually log into the game, run a script and unlock everyone's RealID information (unless they've disabled it using the parental controls). This is regardless of whether or not you actually <i>use</i> RealID.
2) RealID may not even be <i>accurate</i>. As a chick who got married <i>after</i> I created my WoW account, I still haven't updated my account information despite legally changing my name (because Blizzard makes it into a huge production and I don't have a scanner). At this point that's probably going to work in my favor, but it's still an issue.
3) As someone who has gotten harassed by her fair share of creepers in game, I'm really glad that said creepers can't track me down <i>out</i> of game. Yet. Maybe this is hugely sexist, but I feel like these changes will disproportionately discourage female gamers from posting in the forums.

Although RealID has already shown up on Ars Technica, I'd like to see some op-eds from actual players show up on some of these big tech sites. Maybe it's about time for us to write letters.

I don't have RealID, so I'm curious how my previous posts on official forums could identify me through that? While I think RealID is Real(Bad)ID(ea) (there are better ways to accomplish everything RealID does without sacrificing an iota of personal privacy), this change is worse. However, it's not quite as draconian as some of the alarmists and conspiracy theorists would have us believe (e.g., retroactively replacing character names with real names in forum posts).

Lume, you make an excellent point about customer support: There won't be an overload in the forums if no one's willing to use their real name to try to resolve an issue.

Blizzard: Stupid idea is stupid.
